The prime minister and leader of the opposition have paid tribute to a soldier killed in Afghanistan.

Cpl Darren Bonner, 31, from Gorleston in Norfolk, was serving with the 1st Battalion Royal Anglian Regiment and died in an explosion last week.

Cpl Bonner was planning to get married and buy a house in Great Yarmouth at the end of his duty in Afghanistan.

Tony Blair said that British troops had shown their courage in taking part in fierce fighting in south Afghanistan.

"I know the whole House of Commons will want to join me in sending our profoundest condolences to the soldier's family.

"The country should be proud of the sacrifice he has made," said Mr Blair.

Opposition leader David Cameron echoed this sentiment and said he was pleased to join in the tribute to those who had given their lives for their country.
