Workers protest as factory closes

More than 400 people will lose their jobs
Workers and their families are planning to protest against the planned closure of a pork and bacon products factory.

Protesters will rally at the Tulip plant in Thetford, Norfolk.

The Transport and General Workers Union said the area is an unemployment black spot and the 400 workers will find it difficult to get other jobs.

The union also accused the company's parent firm Danepak of withdrawing long-standing redundancy arrangements.

Regional officer Miles Hubbard said: "We will increase pressure on the company, including contacting their supermarket customers, if members continue to be treated with disrespect."

Tulip said it was expanding its plants in King's Lynn, and at Linton in Cambridgeshire, and some new jobs will be available to workers there.

Peter Judge, managing director of the North East division, said: "The Thetford site had inherent infrastructure and environmental issues that we are unable to overcome".
