A former footballer who admitted stabbing his ex-girlfriend has been jailed for seven-and-a-half years.

Ex-Norwich City midfielder Peter Mendham of Trowse, Norfolk, pleaded guilty to wounding with intent at an earlier hearing at Norwich Crown Court.

Mendham, 46, was arrested in October last year after police were called to his home, where they found Charlotte Hyam with life-threatening injuries.

She later lost a kidney after undergoing emergency surgery.

Ian James, prosecuting, said Ms Hyam, 39, was with another man when she began a relationship with Mendham two years before the attack.

'Immense remorse'

After Mendham was arrested for drink driving last year, Mr James said Mendham became obsessed with Ms Hyam and was worried about losing her.

"He explained to her that he would kill himself if she ever left him," Mr James said.

The court heard the pair were at Mendham's house when they had an argument and Ms Hyam returned an engagement ring.

When the mother-of-two said she had to leave to pick up her 13-year-old daughter Mendham refused to let her go, the court heard.

Mendham then picked up a knife and stabbed Ms Hyam in the back, the court heard.

In a statement Ms Hyam said: "Peter told me if he couldn't have me no-one would and that we were both going to die."

Mendham waited 10 to 15 minutes before calling the emergency services, leaving Ms Hyam bleeding in the hallway of his house, Mr James said.

Michael Clare, in defence, said of Mendham: "His remorse is immense. He wishes he could turn the clock back. He knows he can't."

Mr Clare said that despite the attack Ms Hyam wanted to resume her relationship with Mendham.

Mendham played more than 260 games for Norwich between 1976 and 1987.
