Talks over £12m hospital legacy

A debate is taking place by health watchdogs about what to do with a £12m legacy left to Cromer Hospital, in Norfolk, by a former patient.

Sagle Bernstein left £12m to the hospital when she died in May 2000 to thank staff who cared for her sister.

Members of Norfolk's Health Scrutiny Committee are discussing plans to rebuild the hospital using the money.

This would see it carrying out more day surgery and a refurbishment of the existing eye department.

The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, which operates the Cromer hospital site, is consulting until the end of February on a new plan which would see the current hospital site redeveloped in a move which would scrap overnight beds.

Consultation with the committee is being carried out at the same time as public consultation.
