Footballer on murder bid charge

A former Norwich City footballer has appeared in court charged with attempted murder after a 39-year-old woman was stabbed.

On Saturday Peter Mendham, 46, of Whitlingham Lane, Trowse, Norfolk, was remanded in custody to 30 October by Norwich Magistrates' Court.

Police were called to a property in Trowse near Norwich on Wednesday night and found an injured woman.

She remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

Mr Mendham played for Norwich City between 1978 and 1987.
