A six-year-old girl is recovering in hospital after being attacked by an American bull dog.

Tyla Cole was with her father, Marcus, when the dog turned on her at a friend's house in Norwich on Sunday.

Mr Cole, 34, of Cromer, Norfolk, managed to pull the animal off his daughter - but not before she suffered injuries to her back and thigh.

Police said: "Clearly this is a tragic accident which has resulted in a young girl receiving some nasty injuries."

Dog destroyed

"This is now a civil matter. No criminal offences have been committed," the spokesperson added.

Mr Cole said the dog was wagging its tail at them but moments later it attacked.

"The dog jumped on Tyla's back biting and clawing," he said.

"I managed to get the dog off her back but then it bit her thigh."

She has had two operations since the attack.

A Norfolk and Norwich University spokesperson said she is recovering well.

The dog has now been destroyed.
