A £7m pathology laboratory capable of analysing 50,000 cervical smear tests a year has opened.
The lab will serve patients in Norfolk and north Suffolk
The Cotman Centre, named after Norfolk artist John Sell Cotman, is based at the Norwich Research Park.
It was formed from the merger of the pathology departments at the Norfolk and Norwich and James Paget hospitals.
The new cellular pathology centre will also be the home of Norfolk's new radiology academy - one of three in the country - announced in 2003.
Cellular pathology is the science of examining tissue and cell samples to help doctors diagnose cancerous specimens.
The new cellular pathology lab is one of the biggest in the country and will serve the needs of Norfolk and north Suffolk.
Dr Virginia Sams, consultant histopathologist at the Norfolk and Norwich said: "Demand from hospitals and family doctors for cellular pathology services has been growing year on year.
"We are delighted we now have new facilities which will benefit both patients and staff."
