New figures show that most crime has fallen in Norfolk since last April but sex offences have increased by 93%.
Police figures reveal significant falls in car offences and burglary. A rise in sex crimes is put down to one alleged offender whose victims live elsewhere.
Chief Inspector Roger Wiltshire said crime levels are low but after the murder of a 95-year-old man in North Norfolk, people might not think that.
"When we get tragedies like the one in Sutton people get nervous," he said.
He claimed the level of burglary in Norfolk is very small and getting smaller every year, but high profile cases can give an unrepresentative view.
The number of sex offences has shot up by 93% and Chief Inspector Wiltshire said it amounted to 600 offences.
He said: "Much of this increase in sex crime is down to one alleged offender.
"But I must stress that most of the victims are outside our area.
"Because the calls were made in our geographical area they appear on our figures."
