Driver injured in A47 crash dies

A 74-year-old man who was critically hurt when his car went into a water-filled ditch on Norfolk's Acle Straight on Monday has died.

Basil Jackson, of Gorleston, died at the James Paget Hospital on Wednesday.

His wife, Janice, is in a critical condition in intensive care at Norfolk and Norwich Hospital.

David Long, 24, of Great Yarmouth, has been charged with driving with excess alcohol and will appear at Great Yarmouth Magistrates Court on Friday.

Cut free

The couple were in an Audi car which went into the ditch on the A47 after being involved in an accident with a Vauxhall Corsa.

The couple were trapped in the overturned car and had to be cut free by fire crews.

Police closed the Acle Straight for four hours after the accident.

A second man questioned by police was released on bail pending further inquiries.
