Worker 'started Carrow Road fire'
Dick Cann
Dick Cann claims he could have started a disastrous fire
A former employee says he accidentally started a fire which destroyed the main stand at Norwich City's Carrow Road ground in 1984.

Investigators put it down to an electrical fault, but Dick Cann blames himself for the blaze.

He said he had forgotten to turn off a three-bar electrical heater before leaving on the night of the fire.

Mr Cann told BBC Look East: "The next day my son said 'have you heard the stand burned down?'

"I put two and two together and got four and didn't speak of it for years and years."

He said the heater had been in a ballboys' shed.

Neil Doncaster, the club's chief executive, was sceptical about the confession.

He said: "I don't think we'll ever know what caused the fire, it's an interesting story, but probably only now of historical interest.

"That was 20 years ago, and the world has moved on."
