Former school for deaf in Birkdale set alight

Arsonists have set fire to a former school for deaf children on Merseyside.

Fire crews were called to the School for Hearing Impaired Children, in Lancaster Road, Birkdale, at 0220 BST, after police on patrol saw a fire.

At its peak, up to 40 firefighters tackled the flames which had ripped through the three floors and roof of the Grade II listed building.

Merseyside Police are investigating and have appealed to anyone with any information to contact them.

The fire service said the building had been unoccupied for several years.
