Merseyside teacher arrested over pupil sex claim

A teacher from Merseyside has been arrested over claims she had sex with a teenage pupil.

The woman, 37, from Hightown, has been suspended by her school - which is not being named for legal reasons - while the allegations are investigated.

Officers have spent the past month investigating the claims surrounding the pupil, a boy.

The teacher was arrested on suspicion of an abuse of trust on Wednesday and is now being questioned by detectives.

"Merseyside Police can confirm that a 37-year-old woman from the Hightown area has been arrested on suspicion of abuse of trust," a spokeswoman said.

"She has been taken into police custody where she will be questioned."

The school's local education authority, Sefton Council, said it was aware of the allegation.

"The member of staff was immediately suspended, and continues to be, while Merseyside Police are investigating," said a spokesman.
