A woman has been taken to hospital with burns after a house fire on Merseyside.

The woman, thought to be aged about 30, had managed to get out of the property in Upper Brassey Street, Birkenhead, when fire crews arrived.

She was taken to Arrowe Park Hospital suffering from burns to her face, chest and upper arms. She was also suffering the effects of breathing in smoke.

The first floor bedroom and its contents was damaged by the fire, which happened in the early hours.

The remainder of the first floor was severely damaged by smoke, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said.
