The 22-year-old was attached to Belle Vue barracks in Manchester

Relatives of a Territorial Army soldier from Merseyside who was killed in an attack by an Afghan police officer have said he will "always be our hero".

Cpl Steven Boote, 22, of Birkenhead, is understood to have only been two weeks into a tour of Afghanistan when he was shot dead with four others on Tuesday.

He served with the Royal Military Police based at Belle Vue barracks in Manchester.

His family described him as "a son and friend who can never be replaced".

His parents Margaret and Anthony added: "We couldn't stop him doing what he believed in, and he did believe he was doing his bit for his country.

"Steven, we are all so proud of you and you will always be our hero."
