Wayne, Coleen and Kai Wayne leave the hospital

Wayne and Coleen Rooney have emerged from hospital with their new family member, Kai Wayne Rooney.

The Manchester United striker carried his son from Liverpool Women's Hospital in a black car seat, accompanied by his beaming wife and other family members.

Coleen gave birth to the couple's first son at 1420 GMT on Monday. She was nine days overdue.

The couple are said to be "thrilled with the wonderful addition to their family life".

Reality television star Coleen was smiling as she emerged from the hospital on Tuesday morning.

Accompanied by her mother Colette, she climbed into a silver people carrier driven by the England striker's father, also called Wayne.

The couple thanked staff as Wayne's father opened the car boot, which was full of flowers and balloons from well-wishers.

The Manchester United star has been excused from playing for his side in their next fixture, against CSKA Moscow at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.
