The victim was discovered with bullet wounds to his chest and stomach outside the Kingfisher Hotel pub on Bewley Drive, Kirkby, at 2210 GMT on Friday.

Police said the man, from Kirkby, was in a critical condition in hospital after undergoing emergency surgery.

A woman aged 47, and three men aged 20, 23 and 51, are all being held by Merseyside Police over the shooting.

The pub and its car park have been cordoned while forensic examinations take place.
