Flypast celebrates navy centenary

Flypast over HMS Illustrious
More than 40 aircraft took part in the event on Friday

The Royal Navy has celebrated 100 years of aviation with a flypast over HMS Illustrious in Liverpool.

More than 40 aircraft, including Merlin helicopters, Harrier jets and Fireflys took part in the event over the River Mersey on Friday afternoon.

Prince Andrew, Commodore-in-Chief of the Fleet Air Arm, joined Admiral Sir Trevor Soar, Commander-in-Chief Fleet of the Royal Navy to watch the display.

HMS Illustrious will be moored near the Liver Buildings until Tuesday.

Aircraft from across military history took part in a series of flying formations over the Navy's flagship carrier.

Lynx helicopters, Falcon and Hawk jets and the Seafire and Sea Fury crafts will made up the display.
