Re-build plan at crane fall flats

The collapsed crane at Cornhill
Many residents have not been able to access their homes

Part of a building in Liverpool damaged when a crane collapsed on to it may have to be taken down.

The 55-tonne weight on the crane crashed through the roof of the apartment block at Cornhill in the city centre 10 days ago.

Engineers are still assessing the damage, but say it is likely that part of the building will have to be stripped down and rebuilt.

Many residents are still waiting to access their possessions.

Probe under way

Liverpool City Council said a scaffold block may have be to constructed alongside the Chandlers Wharf flats to get into some of the homes.

The accident has affected two addresses - 24 and 26 Cornhill, which are two apartment blocks in one building.

A council spokesman said work was being carried out as quickly as possible, but that some parts of the building were still unsafe.

The Health and Safety Executive is carrying out an investigation into the accident.
