Collapsed crane residents return

Crane collapsed over building
Some residents will be temporarily re-homed until the crane is removed

A number of residents have been allowed back home, a week after a crane collapsed on to an apartment block in Liverpool city centre.

More than 100 people had to be moved after the accident at Chandlers Wharf in the Baltic Triangle on 6 July.

Work is still continuing, on part of the site off Park Lane, to remove the crane's counter-balance which became embedded in the building.

Some parts of the site remain structurally unsafe.

Residents of 24/26 Cornhill cannot be allowed to return yet for safety reasons and arrangements are in place to provide them with a longer-term solution to their accommodation needs, police said.

Supt Simon Irving, from Merseyside Police, welcomed the progress made over the weekend.

He said: "This has been a difficult and complex operation requiring vast levels of planning and expertise from all the agencies involved and it is credit to that teamwork that this breakthrough has been made ahead of schedule."
