Joseph Lappin was stabbed in the heart

Police investigating the murder of a teenage Army cadet could bring charges within two months, an inquest heard. Joseph Lappin, 16, was knifed through the heart after being chased by a gang near a youth club in the Everton area of Liverpool in October 2008. On Tuesday, Liverpool coroner Andre Rebello adjourned the inquest into his death until 8 September. Investigations are ongoing and Mr Rebello adjourned proceedings to allow officers more time to bring charges. No update Det Insp Lawrence Forrest said: "The investigation is continuing satisfactorily. "We are diligently carrying out inquiries and at this time there is no investigative update to give as the inquiry progresses." Mr Rebello said: "At this stage it is a very active investigation and it would be inappropriate for me to do anything other than adjourn this case." Joseph, who was a member of the Liverpool Scottish Regiment, had been enjoying his first night out at Shrewsbury House Youth Club with friends when they were chased. Joseph's friend, Callum Naden, 17, was also stabbed but survived the attack. A third boy sustained minor injuries. Merseyside Police arrested 13 youths on suspicion of murder. They have since been bailed.
