Residents return after yard blaze

A safety cordon put in place following a fire at a derelict car spares yard in Merseyside has been lifted.

The blaze broke out on Beaumont Street, Toxteth, on Friday and forced nearby residents to be moved from their homes to spend the night in sports centres.

They have since returned home and an investigation into the cause of the fire has been started.

Emergency crews had been concerned over the possibility of a gas canister at the site exploding.

Supt Mike Martin, from Merseyside Police, said: "At this stage it is not clear what started the fire. Any investigation will be carried out with the assistance of the fire service once full access to the scene can be gained."
