A man who admitted shooting dead a Liverpool shopkeeper has been detained under the Mental Health Act.

Yemeni shopkeeper Abdo Saeed Al-Selwi, 53, was shot in the chest at his Huyton newsagent shop in May last year.

Ronald Higgins, 38, of Knotty Ash, suffered from a "major mental illness" and a "morbid fascination" with serial killers, Liverpool Crown Court heard.

Judge Henry Globe QC sentenced Higgins to a hospital order "without limit of time" under the Mental Health Act 1983.

Higgins, of Stonefield Road, did not have his mental illness detected and diagnosed until after the killing, the court heard.

Medication bought online

Judge Globe told Higgins: "It's clear that about 10 years ago you started to develop a morbid interest in serial killers.

"Over the three month period prior to committing this offence you were spending a substantial amount of your spare time visiting internet sites about serial killers and weapons.

"In addition you have been buying medication on the internet."

Mr Al-Selwi was found bleeding to death by a member of the public behind the counter of Carol's Newsagent and General Store in Page Moss Lane.

The court was told Mr Al-Selwi, who had reached for a baseball bat when he saw Higgins holding a gun, repeatedly said "no money, no money".

In February Higgins pleaded guilty to manslaughter at Liverpool Crown Court on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

In August last year Higgins admitted attempting to rob Mr Al-Selwi and possessing a .44 calibre Pietta muzzle loading revolver at the time of committing an offence.

He also admitted other firearms offences.
