Man arrested over woman's murder

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the body of an 84-year-old woman was discovered by police at a house in Wirral.

Officers forced their way into the property on Thorncliffe Road in Wallasey, just after 1520 GMT on Monday, after neighbours smelt gas.

Merseyside Police said the woman's death is being treated as a "domestic-related incident".

The man arrested is in custody and being questioned by officers.

A post-mortem examination is due to take place later to establish how the woman died.

A police spokesman added: "There was a strong smell of gas in the house and a neighbouring property was evacuated as a precaution."

House-to-house enquiries have been taking place.
