One killed in motorway collision

A 19-year-old woman has been arrested after one person was killed in a crash on the M62 in Cheshire.

The woman was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving following the collision between a lorry and a car at 1030 GMT, said police.

The motorway was closed in both directions between Eccles and Warrington. One lane has reopened eastbound and all lanes westbound.

Cheshire Police said the victim was a 50-year-old man from Yorkshire.

Three other people have also been injured in the incident.

Drivers were stuck for up to six hours in two miles of tailbacks.

Highway Agency officers made "welfare visits" to drivers stuck in freezing temperatures in their cars.

The motorway is likely to be busy with Manchester United and Manchester City football clubs both playing home games later.
