Sex attack on woman in cemetery

A 24-year-old woman was seriously injured when she was sexually assaulted in a cemetery in Southport.

Merseyside Police said the woman had been out in the vicinity of the Bakers Bar and was attacked after leaving the area, possibly in a taxi with a man.

The woman got out of a vehicle in Cemetery Road and was attacked shortly afterwards in Duke Street cemetery.

Her attacker is described as white, in his 30s, tall, of thin build, with fair hair and wearing a cream jacket.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the attack which took place in the early hours of Thursday.

Det Ch Inp Nikki Holland said: "This woman has been left severely traumatised by her ordeal.

"We would like to talk to anyone who may remember seeing this man in the Bakers Bar area, the town centre in the early hours or near to the cemetery at the time of the assault in the early hours.

"I would also like to speak to taxi drivers who may have picked up the man and woman in the town centre and dropped them near to the cemetery."
