A homecoming for St Helens Rugby League club had to be cancelled when a fire started in an electricity sub-station at their ground.

Saints were beaten by Leeds Rhinos in the Super League Grand Final on Saturday night.

The players and staff at St Helens were due to greet fans, parade the Challenge Cup and bid farewell to coach Daniel Anderson at Knowsley Road on Sunday.

But a fire in an electricity substation left the stadium without power.

A spokesman for Saints said the homecoming, which was due to start at 1100 BST, had to be cancelled for health and safety reasons.

St Helens coach Daniel Anderson is leaving the club after a three-and-a-half-year spell.
