Thousands visit Superlambananas

Seventy of the Superlambananas are to be sold at auction

Thousands of people are in Liverpool to say a final farewell to 70 of the replica Superlambananas created for the city's Capital of Culture year.

About 125 two-metre tall replicas of the sculpture - made by Japanese artist Taro Cheizo - have been grazing the city centre and suburbs since June.

Seventy of them are now on show at St George's Plateau in the city centre, and have attracted large crowds.

They are to be sold at an auction for the Lord Mayor's Charity Appeal later.

It is hoped the auction will raise £100,000 for the charity.

A further 34 Superlambananas will be auctioned online next Tuesday.
