A woman has died after being rescued from a fire at a house in Wirral.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service were called to the property on Easton Road, New Ferry, at about 0715 BST following reports that a blaze had broken out.

The fire started on the ground floor of the Victorian house and spread throughout the building and next door.

The woman's 26-year-old daughter jumped from a first-floor window before fire crews arrived. She damaged her ankle and suffered smoke inhalation.

She was taken to Arrowe Park Hospital for treatment.

Fire investigation officers are to search the premises later in a bid to establish the cause of the fire.
