'Life to mean life' group to meet

Campaigners calling for a life sentence for murder to mean life are holding a public meeting in Liverpool.

The families of murder victims Chantel Taylor and Andrew Jones are to be among those attending the meeting at The Queen's pub near Derby Square.

Stephen Wynne was jailed for life after admitting Ms Taylor's murder, but is eligible for parole within 18 years.

Her mother travelled to Downing Street with a 35,000-strong signature petition on the issue earlier this month.

Jean Taylor fronted a series of campaigns to find her daughter when she went missing in 2004, but it was two years before her killer was caught.

Wynne, of Birkenhead, Wirral, was originally arrested for setting fire to a mosque - but confessed to Chantel's killing when police found a poem alluding to murder in his house.

Also expected to attend the meeting is the father of Andrew Jones, who died after he was punched in the face outside a nightclub in 2003.

The 18-year-old, from Walton, had been celebrating his cousin's 30th birthday when he bumped into a girl in the city's Hanover Street.

Despite apologising immediately, he was chased by a gang of her friends who punched him to the floor, breaking his jaw and cracking his head against the pavement.

A man was charged with manslaughter, but the case was thrown out of court after three days because of a lack of evidence.
