Gardens go public in Culture year

Ninety allotments in Sefton Park are also open to the public

Some of Liverpool's finest private gardens are open to the public as part of the Capital of Culture celebrations.

One of the gardens, in Toxteth, belongs to Drummond Bone, the University of Liverpool Vice Chancellor, and boasts rare roses and a formal terrace.

Ninety allotments in Sefton Park are also open to show how well fruit and vegetables can be grown in city plots.

One of the plots features a shed which was used by Lilo Lil in the 1980s sitcom, Bread.

Another of the gardens open this weekend is one of Liverpool's old merchant houses at Park Mount, which overlooks Sefton Park.

All the gardens are open under the National Garden Scheme with all proceeds going to charity.
