Driver dies after flooding crash

A motorist has died after his car hit a skip lorry during flash flooding on the M57 motorway on Merseyside.

The accident happened on the northbound carriageway between junctions two and four on Sunday afternoon.

The victim had to be cut free from the wreckage and died later in Fazakerley Hospital, Merseyside Police said.

Heavy rain on Sunday also caused flash floods which forced the temporary evacuation of Liverpool John Lennon Airport, delaying some passengers.

Police advised drivers to avoid north and east Liverpool and parts of Knowsley after the rain caused dangerous driving conditions.

Merseyside Fire Service used pumping equipment to clear the worst-affected areas.
