Queen set to visit culture city

The Queen
The Queen will formally open the Echo Arena

The Queen is to be given a taste of Liverpool's Capital of Culture programme later this month.

During her visit on 22 May, Her Majesty and The Duke of Edinburgh will visit St George's Hall, the Philharmonic Hall and the new Liverpool One development.

She will also unveil a plaque to formally open the Echo Arena and Convention Centre.

The couple will also be treated to performances from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and youth choir.

The Duke of Edinburgh will attend a topping out ceremony at one of the completed buildings.

The pair will later attend a reception with guests involved in Liverpool Capital of Culture and the regeneration of the city, before attending a lunch as guests of Liverpool City Council.

Phil Redmond, creative director and deputy chair of the Liverpool Culture Company, said: "It's great news that Liverpool will be receiving such a high profile visit during our European Capital of Culture celebrations.

"We're looking forward to giving Her Majesty a flavour of the many cultural events and activities taking place in the city this year."
