Temporary bracing has been put in place to prevent any further collapse of Chester's historic walls.

Two weeks ago a 30m section of the walls were closed off after part of the ancient monument collapsed.

Temporary timber supports have now been installed and more intensive work is due to start later this week, Chester City Council said.

English Heritage and independent surveyors have been involved in keeping the wall safe.

Laser survey

An exclusion zone been secured around the scene of the collapse alongside the Grosvenor Hotel.

Community safety wardens are patrolling the area regularly and police have also increased their presence in the area.

A Chester City Council spokeswoman said: "Once it is safe to access the site, a laser survey will also be carried out and structural surveyors will then develop proposals for longer-term support, which will allow for the reconstruction of the wall.

"The timescales of the total project will depend upon the extent of the damage and the complexity of the solutions."

Chester's walls form the most complete circuit of walls in a British city.
