First turbines to power airport

It is hoped the turbines will help cut the airport's CO2 emissions
Liverpool John Lennon Airport (JLA) has become one of the first in the UK to install wind turbines.

Bosses said they were exploring new ways of minimizing the airport's impact on the environment.

Two 15m (49ft) high turbines are now situated at each side of the main approach. The electricity generated will go towards JLA's power needs.

The scheme is initially being run as a trial to see how much money and energy is saved and carbon dioxide reduced.

If successful, the airport hopes to install extra turbines for a more self-sufficient energy supply.

Andrew Dutton, JLA's Environment Manager, said: "The wind turbines will potentially, along with other renewable energy sources, play an important part in the airport's future development.

"This trial will hopefully demonstrate that turbines can be sited at an operational airport and that others can follow suit."
