Beer commissioned to honour ship

The crew have visited the pub to do a taste test of their beer

The crew of a royal navy ship were so enamoured with a Merseyside beer that a brew has been named after their vessel.

HMS Albion's officers developed a taste for the beer, brewed at Liverpool's Baltic Fleet pub, which led to brewers commissioning one in the ship's honour.

The Albion beer is now on sale at the pub in Wapping - which is famous for serving sailors since the 18th Century.

Ian Fielding, director of the Baltic Fleet, said that the pub's new naval link has proved popular with customers.

Taste test

"The commission came about when the crew and officers of the Albion got to taste some of our beer, then our brewer Steve Shaw decided to commission a beer based upon their recommendations," he said.

The 5.4% beer has been described by the brewers as a pale, hoppy bitter, which the officers and crew can drink "without falling over".

According to Mr Fielding, the crew has visited the pub to do a taste test of their beer.

The tipple is also unique as the Baltic Fleet is the only pub in Liverpool which still brews its own beers on site.

Mr Fielding added: "It is very exciting to be able to do commissions of this nature."
