Investment for Open championship
Southport is to benefit from £500,000 worth of investment for the Open Golf Championship next year.

The money from Sefton Council will be spent on new signs, traffic management and on-site facilities for the event at Royal Birkdale.

Land at neighbouring Greenbank High school will be used as a "Gateway" to the course.

Marquees will house hospitality suites, a media centre and additional facilities for the players.

Royal Birkdale has hosted the Open on eight occasions in the past.

Sefton Council Chief Executive, Graham Haywood said: "This is something we have been planning over a number of years and I am extremely confident that we can meet and hopefully exceed the success of the last Merseyside Open at Hoylake in 2006."
