The mother of murdered schoolboy Rhys Jones is appealing for the killer's mother to hand him in to police.

Melanie Jones is making a fresh plea for information to catch the murderer on the eve of what would have been her son's 12th birthday.

Rhys was shot in Croxteth, Liverpool, last month by a boy who fled on a bike.

Mrs Jones will appear on BBC One's Crimewatch saying: "The mother of the person who's done this, I would just plead to her to hand her son in."

There will also be a reconstruction of events leading to the murder on the television show.

Rhys was walking home from football practice on 22 August when he was shot.

Appealing to the killer's mother, Mrs Jones adds: "She must know it's him or she must have some suspicion that it's him.

"Even for his own safety she should hand him in.

"We can't rest or even try to move on without this person being caught and brought to justice. We need it.

"That's why we need people's help to come forward."

Merseyside Police have maintained a heavy presence in the area near the Fir Tree pub since the shooting and have made a number of arrests, although no-one has been charged.

Detectives are urging a mystery caller who spoke to the police on 25 August, three days after Rhys was killed, to get back in touch.

Officers are also keen to speak to a woman who was driving a red car at about 1935 BST on the night of the murder.

The case will feature on Crimewatch at 2100 BST on Wednesday.
