Bishop Harris marked 40 years as a bishop last year
Bishop Augustine Harris, who officially opened Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, has died aged 89.

Bishop Harris was born in West Derby and studied for the priesthood at St Joseph's College in Upholland.

He worked at St Oswald's in Old Swan and St Elizabeth's in Litherland and then as the chaplain to Walton Prison.

He celebrated 40 years as a bishop in a special Mass at the cathedral last year. Bishop Harris died peacefully in Ince Blundell.

In 1966, he was made Auxilliary Bishop of Liverpool and just months later the Archbishop suffered a serious heart attack, leaving Bishop Harris to oversee preparations for the opening of the first catholic cathedral built in the 20th Century.

In 1978 he was appointed Bishop of Middlesborough.

He returned to Liverpool on retirement 15 years ago.
