A police officer was stabbed as he investigated reports of criminal damage at a house on Merseyside.

The 48-year-old was wounded in the head and neck when he went on a call to the Huyton area just after midnight.

He was taken to Whiston hospital by colleagues in a patrol car and later released after treatment.

Merseyside police said a 42-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and was due to be questioned by officers.

Police said two officers were sent to the house when a woman reported damage to a door and a car in Ardennes Road.

Knife recovered

The officers were talking to the people in the house when a man stabbed the 48-year-old officer in the head and neck before running away.

Shortly after the incident, officers arrested a man nearby and recovered a knife.

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: "Shortly after midnight, officers were called to an address in Ardennes Road, Huyton, following a report of criminal damage to a door and vehicle.

"Officers were speaking to the occupants when a man arrived at the house and stabbed a police officer in the head and neck.

"The constable, who is based in Knowsley, was taken to hospital for treatment and has since been released."
