Broadcaster John Peel is being honoured at a civic service in the city he called his "spiritual home".

His widow, Sheila, will be given a commemorative scroll at the service at Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral.

Thursday is the second John Peel day which marks the anniversary of the DJ's last BBC Radio 1 show.

Warren Bradley, Liverpool City Council leader, said: "John was a true honorary Scouser, someone who became synonymous with the city of Liverpool."

Wirral-born Peel died on 25 October 2004 after suffering a heart attack while on holiday in Peru.

Mr Bradley said: "John never forgot his roots.

'Utmost affection'

"As the son of a Liverpool cotton trader, with a quick wit and dry delivery he championed our bands from the Beatles to the Mighty Wah and the Zutons.

"John's love of Liverpool FC was reflected in the names of all four children William Robert Anfield, Alexandra May Anfield, Thomas James Dalglish and Florence Shankly.

"He also wore Liverpool colours and proudly walked down the aisle to 'You'll Never Walk Alone' while marrying his beloved Sheila. John also suffered alongside all LFC supporters through the Heysel and Hillsborough tragedies.

"The people of Liverpool will always think of John with the utmost affection - in Liverpool he will 'never walk alone'."

Radio 1 will feature a series of broadcasts throughout the day in his memory.
