A new guide to help parents bringing up children is being launched by two high profile parents.

Graham and Jan Walton, whose six daughters were born in 1983, are backing the Safe Parenting Handbook.

The guide is being launched at Clubmoor Children's Centre, Liverpool with Graham talking about his experiences of bringing up the girls.

The booklet offers parents and carers information and advice about the varied challenges of child rearing.

It gives advice on issues such as coping with a young child, babysitting, cot death, and smacking, as well as domestic violence and internet safety.

'Fantastic handbook'

Graham said: "This is a fantastic handbook which would have proved extremely valuable to me during my early years as a parent.

"Although our circumstances were a little extreme, the information contained within the booklet is a must for all parents and I know it will help keep children safer."

Councillor Paul Clein, Liverpool Council executive member for children's services, said: "I hope this booklet will offer some ideas and information for parents to help them find their way through the maze of issues that they may have to deal with.

"I hope it will make parenting a less stressful and more rewarding experience."

The booklet has been produced by the Liverpool Children and Young People's Partnership, a group of organisations including the city council who safeguard and promote the well-being of children.

It will be distributed to parents through schools, hospitals and libraries.
