The fiancee of England footballer Steven Gerrard has been questioned by police over an alleged assault.

Alex Curran, 23, was arrested following an incident at a restaurant in Liverpool city centre on Friday.

The alleged incident is believed to have taken place at the Shangri-La restaurant in the early hours.

Gerrard and Curran, who live in Formby, Merseyside, with their two daughters, have been engaged since 2004 and plan to marry next summer.

It is understood she had been enjoying a night out with the Liverpool FC captain and two friends, but Gerrard had left the restaurant at the time of the alleged fracas.

'Matter for police'

A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police said: "Merseyside Police has arrested a 23-year-old woman from Formby on suspicion of Section 47 assault.

"The arrest follows an incident at the Shangri-La restaurant on Victoria Street during the early hours of this morning.

"The woman has been bailed pending further enquiries."

Ms Curran, a model, is known as one of the so-called WAGS (wives and girlfriends) who travelled to Germany to support the England team during the World Cup.
