The campaign hopes to drive home the anti speeding message
Shoppers in Birkenhead will witness the devastation of a car crash at first hand on Saturday when Wirral Council stages an accident reconstruction.

Wirral is the only council on Merseyside to take part in "For my girlfriend" a national road safety campaign aimed at young men.

Emergency services will take part in the event in Oliver Street car park with a young couple trapped in a car.

Special Valentine's Day cards will be also be distributed to young people.

And 98 red roses - representing the number of people killed or injured on Wirral roads annually - are going to be handed out.

This makes young motorists think about the potentially terrible consequences of driving too fast
David Rees, manger of Road Safety Services, Wirral Council

The Valentine card arrives in a sealed envelope with the words 'For my Valentine' apparently handwritten on it.

The card carries the same message on the front, but inside the message is: 'I'm sorry, I didn't mean to kill you. I was driving too fast'.

The text is accompanied by a picture of a female passenger being cut out of a wrecked car by the emergency services.

Manager of Road Safety Services at Wirral Council, David Rees said: "The reality is that this makes young motorists think about the potentially terrible consequences of driving too fast and, in time, it could help save lives."
