The fire service said that the roof of the building had collapsed
A man has been arrested in connection with a fire which badly damaged a flat in Liverpool city centre.

Merseyside Police said the man was arrested following the blaze above a shop on Berry Street early on Friday.

Firefighters, who had halted their search because part of the three-floor building collapsed, were preparing to resume their search late morning.

A Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service spokeswoman said they were still unsure whether anybody was in the building.

She added: "The roof of the building collapsed and fell through the first and second floors."

Roads in the immediate area were closed due to the blaze.
