Chester City manager and former England footballer Keith Curle was racially abused as he queued for petrol.

The former Manchester City captain was queuing at a petrol station in Vicar's Cross on Monday evening when a female customer targeted him.

He said the middle aged woman told him he should not be living in the country and could not change his skin colour.

Cheshire Police said they were investigating the incident, which had left Mr Curle "shocked and appalled".

Mr Curle told the BBC he was waiting to put petrol in his car when a middle-aged woman accused him of pushing in.

"I could see the woman getting irate so I wound down the window to reassure her that I was not trying to push in," he said.

Mr Curle said he was met "with a volley of abuse".

He added: "She said, 'You'll never be able to change the colour of your skin and shouldn't be in this country anyway'. I'm disgusted by the woman's attitude."

He was with his girlfriend, her 11-year-old daughter and the couple's one-year-old baby at the time.

Anyone found guilty of an intentional racially aggravated public order offence faces up to two years in jail, the Crown Prosecution Service said.
