Record visitors attend festival
Hugh Cornwell of The Stranglers
Bands performed on six stages across the city
The Mathew Street Festival attracted more visitors than ever before, organisers of the three-day event said.

About 350,000 people flocked to Liverpool city centre over the bank holiday weekend for the free outdoor music event.

Bands headlining included rock legends The Stranglers, The Christians, The Buzzcocks and Tony Christie.

The festival is organised by the Liverpool Culture Company every August Bank Holiday.

It is part of plans to develop the festival into a major highlight for 2008 when Liverpool becomes the European Capital of Culture.
