Canal crash claims second victim
Gemma Biggin
Gemma Biggin was a "bright and bubbly" girl
A 17-year-old driver critically injured when his car crashed into a canal in Warrington on Sunday has died.

Stephen Abbot's front seat passenger Gemma Biggin, 17, died when the Fiat Punto lost control on a bend and plunged into the Bridgewater Canal.

Two friends, who were rear seat passengers, escaped after breaking the rear window.

Local people are calling for the section of canal along Stockton Lane, Grappenhall, to be fenced off.

Gemma Biggin, a film and media student at Priestly College, and Stephen Abbot, who was studying ICT and geography at the college, were part of a group of friends who decided to go for a drive on the spur of the moment.

Investigations into the crash are continuing but it is believed the car skidded on ice.

Local people say the stretch of road is dangerous as it has neither fencing nor lighting.

"It is a shame that such a tragedy has happened for the sake of a couple of barriers and maybe some signs," said local businessman Nigel Hamilton.

Mike Southworth, Priestley College principal, said: "It was with great sadness that we learned of Sunday evening's tragic events that took the lives of Gemma Biggin and Stephen Abbott.

"Gemma was a bright, bubbly student with a lovely personality who got on well with both staff and peers.

College 'devastated'

"She had a great enthusiasm for her art textiles course and showed herself to be a committed student who was open to new ideas and willing to learn.

"Stephen was a popular member of his tutor group and was most conscientious, well motivated and organised.

"He had a good sense of humour, was respectful and sensitive to others as well as being keen to do well himself.

"As you would expect, this close-knit college community is devastated by this news and our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends at this sad time."
