Coronation Street actress Susan Cleaver has been charged with drink-driving in Greater Manchester, police confirmed.

The 46-year-old, who plays the Street's taxi operator Eileen Grimshaw, was stopped near her home in Northenden in the early hours of Monday.

She was pulled over by officers and breathalysed and charged with driving with excess alcohol.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said she was to appear at Manchester City Magistrates' Court on 14 April.

Ms Cleaver, who joined the soap opera in 2000, was driving a Land Rover Freelander when she was stopped in Palatine Road just after midnight.

She will appear in court two days before actor Ryan Thomas, who plays her son Jason Grimshaw, is due before magistrates accused of motoring offences.
