Camilla steps out on Coronation Street's cobbles

The duchess pulled a pint at the Rovers Return

The Duchess of Cornwall walked along the cobbles of Coronation Street before pulling a pint at the Rover's Return during a visit to Greater Manchester.

The duchess, said to be a life-long fan of the show, toured the Granada Studios set in Manchester.

She told cast members the programme, which is celebrating its 50th birthday, was a "British institution".

Prince Charles and the duchess are visiting several venues across Greater Manchester.

The couple arrived in Manchester by Royal Train pulled by a coal-fired steam locomotive, named the Tornado, which was rebuilt from a 1948 design.

William Roache, who plays Ken Barlow, was chosen to greet the duchess when she arrived at the Coronation Street set.

The duchess told cast members she would love to come back and film a walk-on part, like the cameo appearance by the Prince of Wales, to mark the show's 40th anniversary.

Prince Charles visited the Museum of Science and Industry

"It is a wonderful British institution, isn't it? What would we do without it?"

Meanwhile, Prince Charles visited Manchester's Museum of Science and Industry.

He also gave a speech about his "dismay and alarm" at those who question the science behind climate change.

Charles made the comments as part of the launch of an initiative called Start, to provide the public with advice on how to lead more environmentally sustainable lives.

The couple went on to visit the John Rylands University Library in central Manchester.

They met nine firefighters from the area who recently returned from the disaster zone in Haiti, following last month's earthquake.

Prince Charles then visited members of the Sufi Muslim community at Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium, where he was clapped and cheered.
