Man Utd stewards appear in court

Two Manchester United football stewards accused of breaking the legs of a Manchester City fan during a derby match have appeared in court.

The fan was caught smoking in Old Trafford at the game on 20 September, Trafford magistrates heard.

He was allegedly pushed down a flight of stairs while being ejected.

Mark Roberts, 46, of George Street, Oldham, and Paul Stringer, 45, of Grange Way, Runcorn, are charged with causing grievous bodily harm.

Mr Roberts and Mr Stringer appeared before magistrates earlier and were bailed.

The case was adjourned until 11 January 2010.
